Monday 6th December

This morning I got a sleep in which was great, got out of bed just before 9am, and we went to straight to Ned's beach for a swim.  Upon arrival we noted that the ocean was quite rough, and so we thought we would try the lagoon.  It was a good call - the lagoon was calmer, but it was pretty windy.  We grabbed an umbrella, set it up almost parallel to the ground, and proceeded to entertain the kids.  Tom and I swam out to a floating platform in the lagoon, the kids demanded to be taken out there next time.  Should be interesting.

After packing up we went home for a pre-lunch nap which had to be quick as our next activity was soon.  While the nap was happening we were at the local table, I had my laptop with me and was writing up the previous day's journal, my phone safely on the table.  Suddenly the phone fell off the table.. it must have just inched it's way off over about 10 minutes.  The back corner cracked :(

Once lunch was finished we went back to the lagoon to begin our glass bottom boat tour, organised by the oldies as a birthday present for George and Rory.  Our first stop was North Beach, where we hopped out and the tour guide "Pete" told us about the history of the island, from a geological standpoint.  Apparently it used to be 30km in diameter, and has been eroding for millions of years.  I put sunscreen on everywhere except the tops of my feet, bit of a fail as I would discover later.

We then went for a walk from the beach to the other side of the island to a place called The Gulch.  It was a narrow heavily protected beach, but instead of sand it had thousands of rocks ranging from the size of a fist to the size of a watermelon.  Very picturesque, but hazardous to walk on.

After walking back to North Beach, we got on the boat and motored to a snorkelling location.  The snorkelling was good, there was some old ship wreck parts to swim around where we could see schools of fish.  There was also a big stingray near the boat that was getting cleaned by little fish.  I swam under the boat and the kids could see me through the glass bottom which good fun.  I was "the surprise fish".

On the boat ride home the circumstances were right for turtle sightings, and we stopped at a regular cleaning station where they chill and little fish eat bits off their shells.  We would have seen 5 or 6 turtles in total, a successful trip.

Dinner was local, spag-bol provided by Pip and Tom this time, then a spot of 1982 trivial pursuit, and it was time for bed.

Points of note:

  • Almost had a total meltdown on th

e boat because George and Nani's lunch sambos had been forgotten.  We spread Rory's out as far as we could and Lizl found some nuts in a container that helped ease the pain
  • Apparently some lady on the boat told George and Rory to use their inside voices, which enraged the mums
  • Some other lady saw about 1cm of water in the boat and urgently asked the tour guide if we were sinking
  • George has been having most of his showers at our place, he and Rory enjoy a rousing game of "you can't see me" (behind the glass wall).

  1. John and I climbed Malabar Hill that morning before the glass bottom/turtle tour. Unfortunately, both forgot our phones so no photo evidence. It was a spectacular view though, 209m above sea level.
